2093 Co Rd AK - MICHIGAN VILLAGE HOME FOR SALE - This home is located in the Village of Champion, which is nestled in and around a small valley near the eastern end of Lake Michigamme. The Village is located in west-central Marquette County in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Once a bustling iron mining center of over 2,000 residents in the late 1800's and early 1900's, today it is a quiet town of about 250 full-time residents. The first settlers were English iron miners from Cornwall and French woodsmen from Canada, who took jobs at the new Champion Mine. A wave of immigrants, led by the Scandinavians, Germans, Italians, Irish, and Finns arrived by 1900 and quickly established Champion as a vital railroad, mining, logging, and farming center. This home is located in an area known for Year-Round recreational opportunities in every direction. Just a mile to the west is Lake Michigamme, the second largest lake in the U.P. It is one of the most popular fishing destinations, with 95 miles of shoreline, 27 islands and over 4,300 acres of water. This lake is known for its walleye, muskie, and northern pike, but the Michigan DNR has recently introduced lake trout, splake, brook trout, and rainbow trout into the lake. Other lakes and streams in every direction offer tremendous fishing opportunities any time of the year. With almost 100 miles of shoreline, 27 islands, and bays and inlets to explore, Lake Michigamme is a favorite destination for boaters. Canoes, kayaks, sailboats, fishing boats, pontoon boats, and personal watercraft are a common sight on the lake. Van Riper State Park and Michigamme Shores Campground are on the shores of Lake Michigamme, and are about two miles away. The Peshekee river, which flows into Lake Michigamme just west of Champion, is a favorite of canoers and kayakers, and the Michigamme River, which flows out of Lake Michigamme to the south, is becoming a favorite canoe and kayak destination for many people. Craig Lake State Park, a remote wilderness park is located about 15 miles further to the west. Hikers will find developed hiking trails in Van Riper State Park, The McCormick Wilderness, Craig Lake State Park, as well as the North Country Trail which passes through this area. Besides developed trails there are hundreds of miles of old logging trails on nearby State of Michigan and Corporate CFA lands which are open for exploration. The Western Marquette County Mountain Biking web site has information about nearby trails for mountain biking. Champion township is ORV friendly! There is a Michigan DNR authorized trail running through the Village, and there are nearby remote trails on which to ride your off-road vehicles. As Summer rec sports end, attention turns to hunting in this area. Abundant Whitetail deer, Black bear, Partridge (ruffed grouse), Woodcock, and Rabbits are found in nearby hunting lands.
