12874 M38 - MICHIGAN BERMED EARTH-SHELTERED HOME ON ACREAGE FOR SALE! The 55+/- Acre Homestead being offered for sale is located in north-east Ontonagon County near the Village of Greenland, in Michigan's Western Upper Peninsula! Ojibwa people were the first to occupy this region prior to European exploration. By the early 1600s, French trappers began entering the territory. The first written report about Ontonagon County and its copper was made in 1661 by a French Jesuit missionary, Father René Mesnard. In 1665, Father Claude Allouez reported about the now famous Ontonagon Boulder: a boulder of pure copper, which was located on the West Branch of the Ontonagon River and venerated by the local Indians. The 3,700-pound boulder now resides in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. The 1850s saw mining spread to the Greenland and Mass City areas, and the county supplied much of the copper for the U.S. Government during the Civil War. In the 1880s, large-scale lumber production for white pine began and continued for nearly 2 decades. By the late 1890s, copper production again boomed and production continued through World War I, but metal prices collapsed after the war and most mines soon closed. Since the 1920's Agriculture became significant to the local economy, along with lumber production. The Ottawa National Forest was established in 1931, and the nearby Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park was established in 1945. Today a mix of agriculture, timber production, and tourism prevails! Year-round outdoor recreation now contributes significantly to the local economy making this a great place to live and play. The property offered for sale is a combination of forested areas and working farm lands, and is enclosed by boundary fencing. The parcel is divided into seven pastures, that allows the rotation of cattle raised there to maximize the use of forage. The corral system is designed to allow one person to work alone to vaccinate and perform other treatments to cattle. The woodlands and Corporate CFA Lands to the north provide walk-in access for hunting, trapping, and fishing. Black bear, Whitetail deer, and Geese hunting is excellent here! A large pond, and the Monehan Creek attract wildlife to this property year round. The home on the property has an “elevational” bermed design. There are larger windows and a doorway on the exposed walls of the Living/Dining/Kitchen/Main Bedroom side of the home, which provide light, solar heat, and beautiful views across open fields. The floor plan is designed so these common areas also allows access to a covered patio area and the ground level. The other side of the home is blended into a hillside for soundproofing, and its natural insulation, one of the main ecological benefits of earth-homes. The unique architecture cools the house down in summer and keeps it warm in winter. The home is hardly visible from ground level - Its "close... Continued In Addendum
