Sparta Real Estate Listings and Information

Sparta

Sparta was established in 1846 and is located in Northern Kent County, Michigan.  Conveniently located 15 minutes north of Grand Rapids and 30 minutes from the Lake Michigan shoreline. The west half of the township is on the “Ridge”, a prime fruit-growing area, with many acres of beautiful orchards. The Rogue River runs through the East side of the Township. At the center is the Village of Sparta, a thriving small town.

About "the Ridge"

Fruit Ridge or "the Ridge" is a topographical land feature located NW of Grand Rapids, Michigan and considered to be an Agricultural Mecca. The glaciers of long ago left behind gently rolling slopes. The deposits were fertile clay loam soils with excellent moisture holding qualities that provided great soil and terrain for the growing of premium fruits, vegetables and the raising of livestock, including buffalo.

Approximately 8 miles wide by 20 miles long, the Fruit Ridge is regarded as one of the prime fruit-growing regions in the world. Elevations greater than 800 feet and its location (about 25 miles from Lake Michigan), creates a unique climate (ideal growing and moderate winters) for fruit production. The Ridge supplies 60% of the states (Michigan) apples. An estimated 66% of the Ridge lies in Kent County, all within 20 miles of downtown Grand Rapids.

"The Ridge" is an area of 158 square miles (8 miles wide and 20 miles long) covering 7 townships and 4 counties: Kent (Alpine, Sparta, Tyrone), Newaygo (Ashland), Muskegon (Casnovia) and Ottawa (Chester and Wright).

HISTORY OF SPARTA...The Sparta area was first settled in 1844, with the township formally organized in 1846. The first settler in what is now the village was Jonathan Nash in 1846. Calling the place Nashville, he built a sawmill on Lick Creek. Subsequently, he changed the name of the creek to Nash Creek. Seeing as there was already a Nashville in Michigan, the state legislature suggested Sparta. The village was platted in 1867 and incorporated in 1883.

The first railroad to reach Sparta was the North-South Grand Rapids, Newaygo and LakeShore Railroad in 1872. Farmers brought cattle and hogs to stockyards along this track to be shipped to Chicago slaughterhouses. The first East-West Railroad, the Toledo, Saginaw and Muskegon came through in 1888 and the Sparta Depot was built along its line from Ashley to Muskegon. In 1928 the line became part of the Grand Trunk Railroad. Eventually the line was abandoned. Tracks in front of the depot remained "live" through a connection with PM/Chessie/CSX tracks just east of the depot. In time, CSX removed its switch and the tracks leading to the depot.   The West Michigan Railway Historical Society acquired the depot in 1973 and restored it for a meeting room and museum and is listed on the State Register of Historical Sites. The railroad contributed a great deal to the progress and prosperity of the Village of Sparta and to Sparta Township.

The fertile land in the area attracted more and more settlers, most of whom were farmers. In 1873 the principle products were wheat, corn and other grains, potatoes, hay, wool and maple sugar, with fruit and vegetables playing a major role in area farming. Dairy farming became, and still is, a major agricultural activity in the area. By the turn of the century, many German and Swedish immigrants were farming in the area. They turned to growing fruit, mainly apples and peaches. In the early part of the century, fruit was hauled by horse and wagon to Grand Rapids markets.

HISTORICAL MUSEUMS...

Today, of course, along with the agricultural and industrial base, the Sparta community has developed excellent services in banking, merchandising, insurance, construction and publishing, in pharmacies, hardware, groceries and restaurants, in parks and in its own airport. Excellent schools, a variety of churches, and several service organizations and museums are important parts of our community. Offering easy access to a major metropolitan area and the finer aspects of small town life, Sparta truly is a great place to grow.

In 2007, Sparta Township was designated by the White House as a "Preserve America Community"! Sparta Township is one of only 11 other communities in Michigan to have been awarded with this distinction to date. First Lady Laura Bush leads the initiative through the Historical Preservation Caucus of the US House of Representatives. Started in 2004, it encourages and supports community efforts to preserve our nation’s cultural assets and natural heritage. For more information vist http://www.preserveamerica.gov.
