Located in the heart of Manistee County, just 15 miles from Manistee and 5 miles to Lake Michigan is the community of Bear Lake. The village of Bear Lake was founded in 1863 by Russell Smith. It was purchased 10 years later by George Hopkins and developed as a service community. Logging and the railroad were the prominent industries at that time. Today the village and township boasts a population of nearly 1600 and is largely a tourist destination and retirement community.

The 1800 acre lake that the community surrounds offers all types of recreational activity. A relatively shallow lake makes this a great swimming and boating lake for young and old alike. A public boat launch on the west end of the lake makes easy access for day boaters. The lake is lined with homes and cottages and offers relaxing yet bustling activity throughout the summers months. Winter time pastimes include ice fishing, cross country skiing and snowmobiling throughout the community.

Enjoy the small town atmosphere at it's many events such as Bear Lake Days in July, farmers markets during the summer, Autumn Glory Days and the very special Sparkle in the Park during the Christmas holiday season.
