The most sought-after homes in the Traverse City area are those on the water. And while you can still find some good deals on waterfront properties, the majority of us can't afford them.
An alternative for those of us that refuse to give up on our dream is a shared waterfront community. There are a fair share of smaller neighborhoods that offer private beach frontage, and in some instances a shared dock for your water toys. Not all homes offer views of the water but most are just a short walk to the beach. It's not uncommon to see some kayaks or beach chairs stored in the common area making it easier for you to enjoy the water without having to haul them back and forth.
Keep in mind that while direct waterfront homes are great there are some cons. Some typical complaints of living on the water is the increased maintenance, dealing with erosion, motorboat noise, lack of privacy, and a lot more insects to deal with. Shared communities typically offer much larger lots and are far enough from the water to avoid these hassles.
While homes in these communities may not check off all your dream home boxes, they do offer lake life living at a more reasonable price.
