HARBOR SPRINGS — The city planning commission last week unanimously approved a proposed renewal project at The Village of Hillside senior living community.
Construction on a $6.2 million residential and community center building is scheduled to begin next year as project leaders work feverishly this summer to meet fundraising goals.
Organizers hope to bring in as much as $4.7 million through local, state and federal grants, leaving them $1.5 million to raise privately. About $500,000 has been secured so far.
"Demand for senior rental apartments is expected to increase by 17 percent over the next five years," said Webb Martin, president of The Village's board of directors. "The new building will provide eight additional apartments, but more importantly it will replace the existing 24 units with apartments that better meet the needs of seniors."
The plans were approved Thursday, June 19, by the Harbor Springs Planning Commission.
