About the Saugatuck-Douglas Area

   Saugatuck-Douglas c 1900

The "Saugatuck-Douglas Area" refers to the West Michigan coastal areas from Holland to South Haven and inland.  They share a common past.

In the 1830s William Butler set up a trading post in Saugatuck, which was then a Native American village. Harbor improvements in the 1860s led to shipbuilding and tourism. By the turn of the century hardwood trees were over-harvested and fruit farming developed.

A 19th century hotel on the Kalamazoo River now houses the Chicago Art Institute's Summer School of Art. This area has always attracted artists. In summer you can enjoy the Chamber Music Festival and the Jazz series, two playhouse theaters, and art galleries.  The SaugatuckCenter for the Arts produces exciting programming year 'round.

This former mansion became a tourist boarding house and is now one of the area's finest art galleries.

Unlike so many lumbertowns of the Victorian era, Saugatuck and Douglas were not destroyed by fire.  The architectural heritage has remained intact.

The street is paved now, but looks almost the same today.

Boating and beaching are still favorite activities. The City of Saugatuck beach has been named one of the top beaches in the country. The community has three fine golf courses, too.

Saugatuck's Oval Beach is part of the longest stretch of undeveloped sand dunes in Michigan.

Tourism is a big part of the economy. There is a large collection and variety of lodging facilities.

Former B & B located on Lake Michigan at Pier Cove.

Aside from the natural beauty and recreational activities, this area is a great place to live. It's school system has small class sizes and the Interurban mini-bus makes services accessible to everyone in the township.
