If you are looking for a good place for vacation or retirement northwest Michigan is a place to consider. The Onekama area in northwest manistee county is a great place to view a small resort town on Portage Lake which has a channel to Lake Michigan. Portage Lake has several marinas to allow you to visit by land or sea. Fishing is good on Portage Lake and on many occasions my daughters and I have caught 6 or 7 different type of fish on one outing, you can also go out to the big lake [Lake Michigan] for salmon and perch. This is a great area for all types of outdoor sports snowmobiling, hunting, ice fishing and with lots of state land available the fun goes on year around.

Real estate in this area varies form homes away from the lake which is very accessible via a nice park with a boat launch from 70,000 up to a Portage Lake front home for 650,000. Some other areas to check out are the associations on the south side of the lake which offer fine homes with access to the lake and docking for members. If building your home is your plan the north side has a fine development of vacant lots, some with views of Portage Lake and Lake Michigan with all underground utilities.
