Community Involvement

Community involvement has been a commitment throughout my life and continues with my son. We have organized an annual charity Thanks Giving Day swim in Lake Michigan that has generated many thousands of dollars for good people in trying times for the past 4 years.

I have been the director of a County Commission on Youth for four years in the past and run Meals on Wheels for 5 years. Local political involvement has been limited to single issues for the past several years, but in years past, I have managed numerous political campaigns from State Senate & State Rep. to Sheriff & Judge.

I am a Christian, Master Mason, environmentally conscious Veteran, hoping for peace and prosperity in the near future.

Personal Background

Born & raised in Traverse City, Michigan until age 13, my fathers government employment had us move every six months for five years. Through my teenage years I lived in seven cities and attended six high schools.

Six years on U.S. Navy Submarines  took me more than twice around the globe and I lived in Florida, Hawaii, Connecticut, Illinois and Virginia. Four years at University of Michigan with majors in Political Science, History and Sociology followed.

After U of M, I lived in Frankfort Michigan and owned a distribution business serving West Michigan for eight years. Union strikes & corporate decisions made my business disappear, I moved to Birmingham Alabama to make 800 tons of liquid Oxygen a day. Eventually I switched from the production side to sales of industrial & medical gases & returned to Michigan, serving the Lansing and Jackson markets.

In 1998, I became the national sales manager for a cryogenic service company based in Florida and concurrently owned homes in both Grand Ledge, MI. and Sarasota, FL.

After 09/11 I was recruited to manage a gas company in Charlevoix & returned home to be closer to my son & family. That company was sold & dissolved last year.

Personal Interests

My time with my teenage son is one of my driving priorities at this stage in my life. As an accomplished musician, SCUBA diver and soon-to-be Eagle Scout, he is becoming a consistent source of pride & joy. We share a bond of respect and communication that brings a smile to me every time I reflect on it.

My other interests (some of which he shares and others he doesn't) include passions for: Morel mushrooms, fishing, boating, SCUBA  and Petoskey Stones.

You could say all things Northern Michigan, including it's history, geography and best kept secrets...Let me share them with you.
