October 2016 - M22- Duncun - Real Estate Update - and more....

One of the most important things to me when I first came here many, many years ago, when I was a student at the National Music Camp, was the magnificent drive around Leelanau on M-22 that my Mom and Dad and our family would enjoy. One of the most special things is to keep M-22 in as pristine condition as possible.

This article found in "the Ticker" informs us about the M-22 company that has that state logo on most of the items it sells. We have lost most of our M-22 signs to theft and as they are taken the state is replacing with 22 as the sign. Please read this article.

<img src=http://www.traverseticker.com/local/cache/images/news-photo//uploads/media/images/M22.jpg>

"The state of Michigan has filed suit against Traverse City company M22 over its trademarking of the M-22 highway sign, alleging the company has violated state and federal law.

In documents filed with the U.S. District Court in Grand Rapids, the state argues that highway signs can't be registered and that trademarking signs violates the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), which sets the federal standards for signs, signals and pavement markings. Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette wrote in a 2012 opinion that "no entity can lawfully claim exclusive control over use of the state's highway route marker design, because the design is in the public domain and is otherwise not subject to protection under trademark law."

The Michigan Department of Transportation has experienced growing challenges with thieves taking M-22 highway signs due to the popularity of the M22 brand, and have taken to dropping the "M" off some signs in an attempt to discourage theft.

M22 - represented by Traverse City attorney John DiGiacomo of Revision Legal - has counter-argued that the company's use of the trademark simply allows them to produce merchandise featuring the sign, and does not bar the state or any other entity from imultaneously using the image as a road sign. The company has held its trademark for nearly a decade. The court case comes as a separate state challenge to M22's trademark has stretched out over the course of several years before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board, which hears and decides trademark cases for the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office."

Here's additional important information about the route of M22 that might occur... <A HREF="http://record-eagle.cnhi.newsmemory.com/?token=ffc9a940f87623bb2814a12ac59a7436_57ebbfe9_834c5">Click for the Record Eagle article</A>

Our beautiful West Highland White Terrier, Duncan McDuff Levin 15 ½ years, who was the greatest in personality, smarts and good looks died peacefully Wednesday, September 21st on his special couch wrapped in our arms. He had his favorite rib eye steak that day and he went out in style, as is the family tradition. Our friends Beth and Don visited with him to give him their special hugs and kisses. He was a real part of their family too. Our loving friends Rich and Laurie came and helped dig his grave and we had a beautiful white casket and headstone with his name and some words we thought were just right. Duncan was a wonderful pal. I bred Westie’s for years and brought up some great dogs, but Duncan was the most gentle, sweetest personality and just great around babies and young children which is not a normal trait for this bred. Thanks to Dr. Chuck Morrison, his aid Dawn and Dawn his groomer, plus staff at Suttons Bay Animal Hospital they were wonderful. Many thanks to them. His paw prints will always be on our hearts. We miss him so much already.

What a magnificent piece of property. This is some good dirt with a cozy and cute cottage nestled on 127 ft. direct sand waterfront, 1.10 acres, circular driveway, 24x60 pole barn and garden storage shed.
Sellers are offering a beautiful Mallard travel trailer that sleeps 8 and is only 10 years young in excellent condition for only $5,000.00 when buying the property. It would be very useful if you decide to build your dream retirement home that would be practical to spend the summer while you watch everything being built.

(826 W FRONT STREET TRAVERSE CITY/ 231-032-1760 /

We had appointments all day downtown, but we did not want fast food. So it’s off for slow food in a fast manner. My husband had the single burger which was moist and juicy. I had the TC Chicken salad.
Dried cherries, ice cold romaine lettuce, walnuts, blue cheese, red onions with cherry vinaigrette. Very generous portions at a reasonable price. They have a really big menu which you can review on line before you go. Service staff very polite. Please give this a try.

A documentary that exposes secrets that the diet, weight loss and food industries are using to keep consumers coming back for more. Thank God I gave up sugar 2 ½ years ago. It made such a difference in my life. This is a really good movie to learn lots of interesting facts for your health. 4 out of 5 stars

While Hitler saw the 1936 Berlin Olympics as an opportunity to demonstrate Aryan supremacy—
One African American man---Jesse Owens shattered that dream and resulted in him receiving 4 gold medals. This film tells his story.

Side note, my sister Stephanie and I were invited to the big Jesse Owens Foundation Celebration in Chicago because our parents were very involved in sponsoring promising athletes that coaches thought had Olympic potential. One of the young men was Hayes Jones, the track and field man. He won a bronze in one Olympics and gold in the next one. Mr. Jones became a very successful business and family man who at the age of 76 was still giving lectures. He never knew who helped him through college, because my parents never wanted him to know. We did get to meet Mrs. Owens and her family that year. It was quite a celebration!

Rogers and Hammerstein’s musical classic is about an English widow who takes her son and goes to Siam as a teacher to the Royal Court. She finds herself at odds with the King on many subjects. Siam is called Thailand now and is one of the most beautiful countries in Asia to visit. I have had the pleasure to visit three times on business or pleasure. The music, cinematography, costumes and acting are wonderful. This is a must see if you have not had the pleasure. 5 out of 5 stars

Commuter Rachel Watson catches daily glimpses of a seemingly perfect couple from the window of her train. One day she witnesses something shocking unfold in the backyard of the stranger’s home. She tells the authorities what she thinks she saw after learning that the wife is now missing and feared dead. She starts her own investigation when she feels they are not coming up with the right answers. But the police think she may have crossed a dangerous line. I loved the book and look forward to see how the movie turns out.

This is based on Philip Roth’s last novel which takes place in 1951. Here is a brilliant middle class Jewish boy from Newark NJ who travels on a scholarship to a small conservative college in Ohio thus exempting him from being drafted into the Korean War. He falls in love with a beautiful classmate and clashes with the Dean and puts his and his families best laid plans to the ultimate test. I never read the book but I am intrigued by the subject.

Tom Hanks is my favorite actor and he is perfect for this part of the captain who lands his plane in the Hudson River with 155 lives saved. The story is more about what the stresses are at the FAA investigation, but you see exactly how he lands the plane and the saving of all the passengers and crew. I enjoyed this solid film. It is not a great film, but entertaining and an education about the whole process.

This is worth seeing on the big screen or IMAX. 3.5 out of 5 stars
