What I do

Real estate has been a great career for me, and now I've got the opportunity to share what I've learned.  From helping new real estate agents launch their careers, to working with REALTORS to maximize their earning opportunities and success, I'm all about sharing the opportunity that a career in real estate presents.  Part talent scout, part coach, and all about business development, my passion for this industry ignites me every day.

Professional Background

I've been a Realtor(R) since 1998, and managed Coldwell Banker Schmidt Realtors Benzie County office for 11 years.  In 2011 I became Vice President of Business development for our company, and in 2013 added manager responsibilities for the Traverse City 402 E Front Street office.  An Associate Broker and GRI (Graduate, Realtor Institute) I'm a believer in the value of expanding one's knowledge and base of experience through education and new experiences.

I am Past President of the Traverse Area Association of REALTORS, and currently serve as a Director to the Michigan Association of REALTORS.  In 2007 I was selected as TAAR Realtor of the Year, and in 2011 I graduated from the National Association of REALTORS Leadership Academy.  In 2012 I was surprised and honored to be once again selected as TAAR Realtor of the Year.

I'm also committed to the development of our next generation of industry leaders, and co-founded the Michigan REALTOR Young Professionals Network (YPN) in 2010.  I also founded TAAR YPN in 2012, and I currently am a member of the National Association of REALTORS YPN Advisory Subcommittee, as well as the Conventional Finance committee.

Professional Interests

I am an admitted technophile, and an avid user of social networks and the internet in my business.  I've designed my own web sites and done some blogging as well.  I train and coach agents in our company on a daily basis, and from time to time I get the chance to speak and train about the use of technology in real estate at conferences and other events, which I enjoy greatly.

I take great pleasure in learning and networking with other agents around the country, and have taken part in several REBarCamps (participant led technology un-conferences) and attended numerous national real estate conferences.

Personal Background

I'm a life long resident of Benzie County, but my roots run deeper than that. My father's family was among the first to settle in Benzonia, and my mother's ancestors include one of the early keepers of the Point Betsie Lighthouse. I find my connections to the community to be a great asset, and combined these connections with a strong belief in and understanding of technology to give my buyers and sellers every possible advantage.

I graduated from Northwood University in Midland Michigan with a BBA in Marketing and an AA in Management in 1996.  I then worked in advertising at Ross Roy Communications in Bloomfield Hills for two years before deciding to return to my home town.

I began selling real estate in the spring 1998, and worked several side jobs that first year while I got started, including bar tending at Crystal Downs Country Club near Frankfort.  Then in November of that year I joined Coldwell Banker, and got the training that truly launched my career.  Fred Schmidt, who today oversees all of our technology, taught prospecting techniques as part of that training and I owe a great deal of my success to those sessions.

I married my college sweetheart, Tammy, in 1997 and we have three sons who keep us very active.  Winters family time is spent skiing, sledding and snowmobiling, while summertime will find us camping and playing on Crystal Lake.  Today Tammy has taken responsiblity for the real estate sales business we had built together, while I focus on the growth of our agents and our company.

Personal Interests

I enjoy golf, basketball, being outdoors, reading, boating, learning, my family, and life in general.

I also have coached T-Ball teams for my sons, with no expectation of ever graduating to higher levels.  I'm no baseball aficionado, and if I can just get these kids having fun and starting to make their first athletic decisions, I figure that's success.
