Hesperia is a village in Newaygo and Oceana counties. About half lies in Newfield Township in Oceana County and half in Denver Township in Newaygo County. Lumbering was the reason people originally came to the area and Hesperia was primarily a logging town through the 1800’s. The White River which flows through Hesperia, was used to move logs from forests to sawmills. Many of the settlements came and went as the forests were cleared. What remained through all the years was the White River, the dam and a community of enterprising people. Some logging and sawmills still operate in the area, but many were replaced with agriculture and related commerce.
The Hesperia Dam, believed to have been constructed around 1860, eventually brought another significant attraction, bountiful sport fishing.
