Newaygo Real Estate Listings and Information
Welcome to Newaygo and the Muskegon River!
Located in southern Newaygo County at the junction of highways M-37 and M-82, the City of Newaygo is nestled along the popular Muskegon River. The influence of nature on the area has caused Newaygo to flourish throughout history. With history dating back hundreds of years, the present Newaygo has been built on the hard work and dedication of many people. There are many legends and stories concerning the name chosen for Newaygo. It is believed that the name was derived from an Indian brave, Nah-way-gon, who had a reputation for bravery and strength. Seen and admired by the area’s first European trappers, Nah-way-gon served as an inspiration to embrace the area as it was.
The City of Newaygo is the oldest community in Newaygo County. The Penoyer and Brooks families were among the first settlers to Newaygo after the many Native Americans that called it home. The Penoyer Brothers founded Newaygo’s first saw mill known as the “Big Red Mill”. The rail service came through Newaygo in 1873, connecting with metropolitan Grand Rapids, Chicago, and Detroit. The City Museum is filled with pieces of Newaygo’s history. In 1883 a massive fire destroyed Newaygo, leaving only two buildings standing. The architectural influence existing today is of the late Victorian style. The proximity of the Muskegon River was the driving force of Newaygo’s early economy, with mills, lumbering, and recreation developing near by. The city today is a place for families to enjoy the heritage of the area.
A complete collegiate level training facility is an integral part of The Stream. Muskegon Community College has designed initial curriculums to create exciting, contemporary jobs in medical coding, billing and transcription, with the possibility to obtain a computer certificate in as little as nine months. With Grand Rapids and the Medical Mile 40 minutes away, The Stream provides the perfect opportunity for students to acquire a job-ready education for a market within close proximity.

Marshall Memorial Park
The Marshall Memorial Park was established in the beginning of 2004 by the Newaygo City Council; to remember Trooper Kevin M. Marshall of the Michigan State Police-Newaygo Post, who was killed in the Line of Duty while serving the citizens of Newaygo. Trooper Kevin Marshall along with all fallen officers is honored every Friday before Memorial Day with a candle light vigil held in the Marshall Memorial Park.
This park is located on State Road (M-37), downtown Newaygo. When entering the park you are welcomed with beautiful gardens full of wild flowers, along with a memorial statue, honoring Trooper Kevin Marshall.
The park is then extended back into the woods with a trail along Brooks Creek to a pavilion furnished with picnic tables for use by the public. There is also a look-off deck on Brooks Creek, giving you access to the beautiful scenery and colors of fall.
The City of Newaygo is in the process of extending the trail farther along the creek edge, ending it at Clay Street. This trail will be a natural walking trail through the woods for anyone who enjoys a casual relaxing walk through the trees.
Located on the Muskegon River off of Water Street, Phase 2 gives you complete access to the Muskegon River. This park also offers playground equipment for children, picnic tables on a deck that overlooks the river, charcoal grills and a paved walking path along the Muskegon River.
The Skate Park is located on the corner of Barton Street and Ewing Street and is open to the entire community. We ask that you do not vandalize or damage the equipment. If vandalism and damage occurs, the park will be closed until repaired.
The Skate Park is open mid spring, the entire summer, and fall seasons from morning until dusk. It will be closed during the winter months.
The Skate Park is 80 feet by 120 feet in size, filled with quarter pipes, handrails, fun boxes, and other obstacles for skating.
Feel free to check out the City of Newaygo Public Skate Park when your visiting town!
Located on Barton Street, next door to the Public Skate Park, the skating rink is open to the public during the winter months. There is also an on-site warming house.
