For the Love of Sand
There is one sure way to know if a person has ever been to the Silver Lake Sand Dunes located on Lake Michigan’s shoreline between Ludington and Muskegon. Say the words “Silver Lake Sand Dunes.” If they have ever been on those magnificent mounds, a smile will instantly form on their face.
It doesn’t matter if someone is 5 or 95, the SLSD (affectionately abbreviated) will evoke a feeling of joy and affection found only in a person in love. Like young lovers smitten, new parents with their baby, or a grandchild helping grandma make pancakes, the dunes never disappoint.
Whether you have seen them a hundred times or one, your mind will stop and wonder, how could it be so beautiful? The white sand contrasts with the blue skies. They rise out of the blue lakes about 4 stories and span a whole side of Silver Lake and miles of Lake Michigan’s shore.
Bury your feet deep in the cool sand on a hot summer day while the kids beg to be buried up to their necks. You will feel the challenges of the world be absorbed by the sand, like a magnet pulling them away.
If you have never seen the Silver Lake Sand Dunes, prepare to take them on, you can’t resist. Whether it’s on a seat or on your feet, you will accept the throw down. I prefer to climb leisurely and hop from the top and watch the kids who run, and run, and run, like it’s the last day of school. What a site. Take a deep breath and take them all in, it’s a trip you will never regret.
From the first time you see them on the horizon when you come over 18th avenue, to your last view of them out your rearview mirror, you will feel it. That feeling of being in love, the kind that lasts forever.
