Exploring the Lakes of Kalkaska County (taken from National Trout Festival excerpt)
Kalkaska County has over 80 diverse lakes. some are excellent water sports lakes, some are great fishing lakes, and others are quiet, backwoods places where people rarely go or even know about. The largest lakes attached to or inside this county are Torch Lake, Manistee Lake and Bear Lake.
Manistee Lake is a big (860 acres), shallow lake with the deepest part only 17 feet. This makes it a great waterskiing or tubing lake as well as personal watercraft destination. Bear Lake is a 60 feet deep, 300+ acre all-sports lake that is planted with brown trout. Smallmouth bass, yellow perch and pan fish are caught here. Rock bass of Master Angler proportions are in abundance. Public access with a paved launch ramp, a dock and small beach is on the southeastern corner of the lake.
No matter what kind of inland lake recreation you enjoy, it can be done in Kalkaska County
